Musings from Kathleen

As I watched It’s A Wonderful Life (it’s a tradition!) this Christmas, I found myself thinking how truly beautiful it was that such a small community came forward to help George Bailey, to keep him in business and how it’s such a touching moment  when a community pulls together to support itself.  Then I caught myself; Wait! I live in this type of community; this is our Marshall!

We Marshallites understand that in order to succeed, we need to support each other and lean on each other at other times. I thought about all the times in the past seven years of growing as a new and better business owner when I did just that. I knew that I could rely on this community to have the patience and advice that I needed.   In turn, I was and would be there to help and support them when they needed it.

This Christmas was a prime example of our own “George Bailey community”. I hosted my annual Christmas Tree Lane which is an event where local crafters and vendors sell their merchandise in our greenhouse for the months of November and December.

W
ell, the close of Christmas Tree Lane came, and as I was totaling the amounts for the vendors, I may have cried a little. Our community, our little town of Marshall, shopped local this holiday season and helped these community members sell over $3,000 worth of their handmade merchandise.  That is money coming from and staying in Marshall!  I no longer envied George Bailey's life because I realized that I that had the "Wonderful Life" as well.

I believe in what Henry Ford once said:  “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” Marshall is successful because we work together to grow into a better tomorrow, not just for our children and their children but also for ourselves, for everyone.

Thanks for being part of our family.

Pumpkin Something

From Kathleen....

Ah, the Pumpkin Something... one of the two main fundraisers here at OERTHER’S.

At this event we raise money to help benefit M.A.C.S (Marshall Area Community Services). One thing M.A.C.S does is help give food and clothing to those with less of a stable income. During the Thanksgiving season M.A.C.S. also buys turkeys for its families. At OERTHER’S,  as part of the fundraiser, we sell one foam turkey for $10 and we hang it on the wall with your name or a message you write.  All of this money raised helps make someone’s Thanksgiving easier! This year the community worked together to buy 40 turkeys! With just the foam turkey sales we raised $400 which is approximately 40 whole frozen turkeys! Then we held the Pumpkin Something on the 17th of October, and yes, I know, Michigan vs Michigan State game and yes, extremely cold. But, something extremely amazing happened! Even with all those obstacles the event faced, it was a roaring success! The community of Marshall came out to show their support and was able to raise over $2,500 to benefit those less fortunate.

This is why Marshall is great and I am blessed to own a business here.
